April 14, 2009 (Computerworld) Cautious business IT administrators are more willing to stay with the devil they know, Windows XP, than risk the devil they don’t, even if the latter is the highly touted Windows 7, a research company said Monday.

According to Dimensional Research Inc., which surveyed more than 1,100 IT professionals in March, 72% of those polled said that they are more concerned about the cost and overhead of migrating to Windows 7 than they are about continuing to supporting the eight-year-old Windows XP. Only 28% felt the opposite, that they’re more worried about holding XP’s hand than migrating to Windows 7.

Just illustrates that Microsoft Windows users aren’t as stupid as Microsoft hopes, but in fact smart. Windows XP is a fully functional, secure operating system, Aside from a few new insignificant features. and eyecandy, most of Vista is still the same as XP. Now somebody please tell me why it took 5 years to develop DirectX 10, User Account Control, Aero and Flip 3D? Microsoft must have spent too much time fighting Linux.

Windows 7 on the other hand took far less time and has novel changes in the way users interact with the OS, such as a completely redesigned taskbar. Ah, some of the best inovations have been born about failure.

However, I would ask why should I trust them with the sensitive and important information needed to verify my identity. I can do it with an SHA-512 hash.

• No CSS 3 opacity! The Internet Explorer team have thumbed their noses at this simple feature, we still have to use those pesky proprietary filters.
• No real XHTML support. Some application/xhtml+xml type support would be the ultimate Christmas gift for me. I asked for it way back in 2001.
• Accelerators. Actually a good feature that I just add for just being behind the rest of the pack, though not as powerful as Firefox add-ons, it does add good extensibility of IE, though much of the functionality of the accelerators and more can be added to Firefox with one add-on, Ubiquity.

These are just at the top of my head, feel free to name any I missed.
